I have been trying so hard to bury this chapter of the dire days in my life, but have not had the strength to “dig a hole deep enough” to do so. It was Christmas day. The barrack was small and cold, Lara’s father was taken away by some soldiers to an enormous barn of some sort; working hours were long, many nights he wouldn’t be allowed to come back to the barrack, Lara’s mother was at the military hospital, fighting for her life, she had developed severe pneumonia after the harrowing journey at sea. Many days and nights Lara spent sitting at the window, staring into the vast mountains of snow…..
Life at the barracks felt like a book without words. I was sitting at the window hoping to see Father come back from the factory. Ice crystals had formed on the glass, they looked like little stars, by now I had counted them all. The days were long and lonesome. Mother was very ill at the hospital and Father was gone for days. My Christmas Eve had come to a sorrowful end, my brother was stolen from me by the invaders. I took a last look at the door, it was still open, my brother was gone. It had started to snow. Was it snow or Heaven crying for my brother? The house felt so cold and quiet, the presents laid under the dark Christmas tree, they were never opened. After many days at sea, we arrived at a totally obliterated city, Danzig, Germany. We were ordered to get on a very long and dark train, there were no windows only a huge sliding door. After a few hours it started moving. Sitting in total darkness on the cold boards, the ride felt endless. The happenings during the long ride are etched so deep in my mind, they still linger on for the rest of my life. Finally we arrived…..
